Because the homeowners didn’t really use the 14x14-foot screen porch, they decided to demolish the structure to create a billiards/family entertainment room. Below the new billiards room was going to be a wine cellar and exercise room. The floor had to support not just the weight of the heavy billiards table but also allow for plumbing pipes, heat duct work and electrical components. The owner wanted the downstairs to be without beams or columns, so web joists were used instead, with pre-determined openings put in place for duct work, and spaced 12 inches on center.

Regional winners

Another challenge was determining the shape and size of the room’s mahogany panels because the room’s windows were so tall and wide, and the panels were meant to complement them. The same panels were used in the ceiling to complement the stone fireplace.
