This hillside home, originally built in 1968, was not energy efficient and lacked natural ventilation. The insulation in the walls and ceiling was upgraded, and aluminum windows were replaced with fiberglass low-E casements and sliders. To create an interesting visual on the exterior, horizontal bands of siding break up the untextured fiber-cement panels.

On the inside, to accommodate the owners, who both work from home, partial height walls enclose the office so the views— and natural light—of nearby windows in the great room are visible from the office space. A lighted translucent glass clerestory prohibits smells and sounds from the kitchen to interrupt work in the office area.
