Ten years earlier, this company remodeled this same house, but the new owners wanted this conservative dwelling to be more artistic. To that end, the homeowners requested a 17-foot tall second story loft with cathedral ceiling and a 21⁄ 2 story double-sided fireplace with a custom pre-cast concrete façade. This required the interior to be engineered as follows: a 22-foot steel I-beam was installed to absorb most of the roof load and transfer that force through the kitchen space onto the existing basement foundation. A steel datum line in the kitchen conceals the structural elements. Cantilevers, tall wall constructions and collar ties, Simpson hangars and engineered beams were all used within the second-story loft.

A new well was dug, with a new pump and 2-inch feed to the new pressure tank to deal with the new water demands of the three additional bathrooms and new kitchen appliances. To construct the fireplace, custom mounting brackets were used to mount the panels on top of cement board. It took 115 man hours to prepare for the mount.
