In 1700, a small log cabin was built on this plot of land, which was originally granted from William Penn. Through the years—and owners—many changes were made and additions put on. These owners were no different and wanted to make room for their family while also keeping the historic integrity of this home. Besides the kitchen/breakfast room added off the corner of the house, the homeowners wanted to put a full-sized basement underneath it. The problem was it would be built next to, and 21⁄ 2 feet deeper than, the existing basement, which would mean digging beyond the bottom of the existing stone foundation. This would make the entire structure unstable. Instead, the new foundation was formed piecemeal by digging under the wall in 3 feet alternating increments to leave enough ground to support the 3-story stone wall at all times.

For the inside, old timbers were salvaged from a nearby historic barn that was being dismantled and used to create the ceiling. To accomplish this, the roof had to be created from the inside out because the beams had to be set in with a crane before the roof could be framed, sheathing applied and shingles put on.
